Modbury High School
has a strong tradition of excellence in the teaching of
the Visual Arts and Design.
Students are
offered a wide range of visual arts in years 8 to year 10
and may choose to specialise in senior years.
Courses
offered give
students the opportunity to experience those aspects of
the South Australian secondary curriculum that emphasise
creative problem solving, practical skills development and
the appreciation of our present day and past cultures.
The school
continues to encourage the creative visual arts as one way
that students can develop special talents, follow an
alternative pathway to the future, or simply experience
the personal enjoyment the arts provide as a pastime.
Students with special learning needs are specially catered
for with modified, achievable learning programs.
The increasing
use of computer technology in education has given arts
students the opportunity to develop specialised computing
skills, many of which can be transferred to the workplace.
Modbury High
offers a wide range of courses in computer graphics
programs including Corel Draw, Photoshop and Caddsman.
YEAR 10
Students in
year 10 are offered a wide variety of visual arts courses
and may choose to study up to four semesters. Courses have
a greater specialised content than before and provide the
basis on which to develop more advanced skills. The
subjects offered are:

STAGE 1
Students may
choose either full year courses or a single semester of
the visual arts from the following subjects:

These subjects
are recommended study for students wishing to continue at
Stage 2
ART
Students study
two and three dimensional forms through practical and
research work based on the exploration of different
artist's styles and techniques.
DESIGN
A study of the
Design Process as it applies to Communication Design,
Product Design and Environmental Design.
TECHNICAL
GRAPHICS
This unit
introduces students to the professional world of drafting
and covers Engineering Drawing, Geometric Construction and
Design.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
YEAR
8
All students
study one semester of visual art in year 8 Courses are
designed to give students a broad range of experiences
that introduce them to the range of specialisations that
are offered in art in future years. The program of work
includes:

Design,

Ceramics
-
Multi-media technology.
The course
covers 5 lessons per week for 1 semester.
YEAR 9
Students are
required to choose at least one semester subject from the
‘Arts’ group.
ART A extends
the basic skills taught at year 8 while ART B is a course
designed for those who wish to specialise further in the
Visual Arts.
The learning
program includes:

The use of
Computer Technology as an art form is incorporated in
each of the semester courses.
STAGE 2
Students are
recommended to have gained a sound pass in Stage 1 Visual
Art subjects as preparation for a Stage 2.

VISUAL ART
STUDIES
A full year
course that requires the student to work either as an
artist or as a designed developing and communicating
creative ideas in the areas of visual art or design.
The course is
divide into two sections:
1.
Visual arts practice
2.
The study of Visual Arts
PRACTICAL ART
This subject
requires the student to work as an artist developing and
creating ideas through the production of two and three
dimensional forms.
DESIGN
Students extend
their knowledge of the Design Process and through working
as a designer in two major areas.
TECHNICAL
GRAPHICS
This course
covers the areas of engineering and computer-aided drawing
techniques involving higher level skills of drafting,
tech drawing and design.
CRAFT
Students are
required to work as a craftsperson producing art works
which focus on materials and processes.
