Health and Physical Education            Sports Day Results 2006  ( PDF format )

              PHILOSOPHY

We believe strongly in the values of Physical Education for all students. We believe that Physical Education promotes the following:

-  knowledge relating to wellbeing, health and physical development

-  positive attitudes about lifestyle, activity, health and fitness

-  self confidence and interpersonal skills

The aim of our program at Modbury High School is to provide all students with a broad range of skills and experiences in physical activity and to develop their knowledge and skills in making decisions which affect their lives.

We hope that through out program students will develop a lifelong commitment to participation in active and healthy living. These long term benefits also include increased fitness, better health, enjoyable involvement in social and competitive activities and satisfaction derived from performing skilled movements.

 POLICIES

 CHANGING

 Uniform:

The uniform required for all practical lessons is:

Text Box: The following items are not allowed:
·     T-shirts or skivvies under the school top
·     Stockings
·      School pants, shorts or shirts
·     Clothing with bold or prominent “brand labels” and/or stripes.

-         polo top in correct house colour

-         navy blue shorts or tracksuit pants

-         school hat or cap for all outdoor lessons

-         school jumper may be worn on cold days

-         non-marking sports shoes

Should there be any occasion where it is not possible for students to wear the above uniform (for example clothes in the wash), an appropriate polo shirt, shorts, tracksuit, cap etc. is acceptable (along with a brief diary note of explanation).

Sickness/Injury:

Students should bring a diary note or doctor’s certificate if sickness or injury is likely to restrict or stop their participation in a lesson. They will be given alternate activities to do on these occasions. In year 8 and 9, booklets with activities for ill and injured students are provided.

 Non-changing Procedure:

Teachers are expected to keep a record of the number of times a student is not correctly changed for PE. (“Not correctly changed” includes any variation from the correct PE uniform ie. No hat = not changed). The policy for non-changed students who do not have a satisfactory explanatory note is as follows.

1st time – warning given, join in lesson in school uniform

2nd time – write out PE uniform rules from diary 10 times, join in lesson in school uniform

3rd time – write out PE uniform rules from diary 20 times, discipline note sent home

4th time – student sent to Behaviour  Management Room to receive an after school detention

 SUN SAFETY

The school has a Sun Safety policy. The implications for PE lessons are:

 -         BLOCKOUT is available and students are urged to use it. Ideally students should bring their own and apply 30 minutes before the lesson where convenient.

 -         HATS must be worn for all outdoor lessons. The floppy hat is the preferred one however the peaked cap will be allowed if preferred.

 -         DRINKS are essential for fluid balance. On hot days time will be allowed for drinks and students may wish to bring a plastic drink bottle to school with them. On hot days, as much of the lesson as possible will be taught in the shady areas of the oval and in extreme conditions the program will be cancelled and all activities will move inside to the gymnasium.

Staff are expected to follow these guidelines also.

 EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS

-         follow all instructions carefully to ensure safe participation
