The Modbury High School Band Music Centre offers Music
courses leading to SACE Stages 1& 2. The SACE Stage 2 course can be taken as
either a HES or SAS subject. A number of our students proceed to further study at
Adelaide University, the Elder Conservatorium or the Flinders Street School of
Music.
The main focus of our music programmes is that of Band
Musicianship and the principal vehicles for this are the Stage Band & Concert
Bands. As an adjunct of this a comprehensive programme offering opportunities
for Solo Performance is integrated within the overall structure of music
programmes.
Modbury High School has an outstanding academic record and
we take particular care that, whilst realising their musical potential, our
musicians do not neglect the other aspects of their academic development.
The music programme at Modbury High School incorporates
the standard musical literacy, history, aural and theory together with an
extensive performance programme. Within the courses there is a bias towards Band
Musicianship, Solo Performance and Composing/Arranging. Composition is a
strongly developing focus of the department and is supported by a well equipped
Composition Laboratory. Students who choose the PES Music strands are required
to study Musicianship and those who choose the SAS options may, if they wish,
develop their own interests with an Individual Study. All music students
participate in their class band and there is the opportunity and expectation
that music students will also participate in at least one of the major school
ensembles.
The three major ensembles stand in a symbiotic
relationship to each other and this interdependence is essential to their
further development. The standards attained in the areas of Concert Band and
Stage Band are of a high order as witnessed by our completion/festival results.
Musicians at Modbury High School have access to our
Instrumental Tuition Scheme for which at present no charge is made. Students who
do not possess a musical instrument are able to take advantage of our
Instrumental Hire Scheme. The school seeks to operate the scheme at the lowest
possible rate and under advantageous conditions.
The Music Centre is equipped with a wide range of
musical instruments, a large Band room, a Keyboard Laboratory, a Composition
Laboratory, which comprises computers and synthesisers, Music Classrooms and
Practice Rooms.
The Band Music Centre is performance orientated in its
approach to music education. As a consequence the ensembles are entered in Music
Competitions and Festivals where this is appropriate and where participation
does not disrupt the normal academic programme.
