English as a Second Language is designed for students for whom English is an additional language or dialect and whose knowledge of English is restricted. Eligibility for this course is the study of ESL Stage 1 or a maximum of Language and Literacy levels across the Australian Curriculum: EALD students level 12, if more than 5 years of instruction in English. Students are required to apply to the SACE Board for Eligibility if not previously enrolled in SACE Stage 1 ESL.
Students complete oral and written assignments in the following areas of study:
Students study the language and structure of a variety of text types in relatively formal contexts in a range of media.
Study Students develop a personal and critical understanding of a range of issues and texts, fictional and non-fiction, and produce different responses. They learn to write discussions and expositions that deal critically and analytically with the issues in texts.
The interaction study requires students to interact with one or more individuals (eg interview). Students learn the skills of report writing and evaluation of their work. Students continue to develop skills in speaking to an audience in formal contexts and using presentation aids such as cue cards or PowerPoint displays.
Students investigate a contemporary issue of their choice. Students develop skills in planning, rephrasing and synthesising information and acknowledging sources. Students also gain experience in outlining complex ideas, expressing opinions and adapting language to suit the audience.
