Stage 1 Geography offers students the opportunity to develop an understanding of key geographical concepts and the relationship between human and physical environments. They explore contemporary issues through fieldwork and examine geographical features, concepts and issues through a range of skills and techniques including spatial technologies.
Students will think creatively about ways to tackle social, environmental and economic challenges and make recommendations to ensure sustainable outcomes in the future.
Students study topics within three themes:
Theme 1: Sustainable Places
- Topic 1: Rural and/or remote places
- Topic 2: Urban Places
- Topic 3: Megacities
Theme 2: Hazards
- Topic 4: Natural Hazards
- Topic 5: Biological and Human Induced Hazards
Theme 3: Contemporary Issues
- Topic 6: Local Issues
- Topic 7: Global Issues
Assessment at Stage 1 is school based. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:
- Skills and Applications Tasks
These will involve formative and summative assessment tasks incorporating practical and map exercises, analysis, interpretation and evaluation of data as well as written reports and essays with an end of Semester exam.
