Information Technology (B)

Level: 11 Stage 1
School code: 11ITB
Year level requirements: Non compulsory
SACE code: 1IFT10
SACE credits: 10

Subject descriptor:

This course consists of two topics.

(1) Website Programming

Applications for the web combine a mediarich interface with the ability to interact with a website. Technologies are divided into client-side and server-side. This topic focuses on developing a website with interactive elements that are managed from the client side. Client-sided technology requires the browser to perform operations before it displays the requested web page. Cascading style sheets (CSSs) can be used to give developers more control over how pages are displayed.

Interactivity can be achieved through the use of scripting languages, such as JavaScript, Flash and video animation. Students develop an understanding of programming in a client-sided web environment by developing a system that allows a high level of interactivity through the input of data and resultant program outcomes. The website must meet accessibility standards of publishing, and the design of its interface, navigation, integration of media, and finished layout must be userfriendly. Students use the problem-solving approach of the systems development life cycle to build an interactive website.

(2) Computer Systems:

The study of a computer system is central to the understanding of information systems because of the way software and hardware process data into information. Students develop an understanding of computer concepts and accurate terminology that will help in the development of an information system and the communication of requirements.

Assessment:

Assessment will include both theory and practical work, with tests, assignments and essays.
