With Joanne currently on leave, I've had the pleasure of stepping into the role of Acting Principal since Week 8, and I will continue until the end of Week 1 next term. It has been a truly rewarding experience leading Modbury High School during this time.
As we approach the end of Term 2, the school is bustling with activity. Students are busy finalising their assessments, teachers are diligently writing reports and preparing for Semester 2 classes, and everyone is eagerly anticipating a well-deserved break.
This semester has been action-packed. Our Year 11 and 12 students sat their mid-year exams, gaining valuable experience. Meanwhile, Year 10 students participated in the work experience program, engaging in real-world learning across various industries such as engineering, tertiary education, SAPOL, the Salvation Army, retail, physiotherapy, psychology, trades, and childcare. A special thanks to Mr. Nick Apostolou for his fantastic organisation and attention to detail, as well as the HG teachers and subject teachers who supported and visited students in their placements. Your commitment makes programs like this possible.
Earlier this term, Karl Read led a team of four students to the STEM Racing National Championships in Melbourne. Competing at this level for the first time, they finished a commendable 11th in Australia. Additionally, our students participated in the H2GP State Championships, finishing 9th despite a few mechanical challenges.
We also celebrated Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week, culminating in a memorable assembly. We were honoured to welcome special guests, including Ngarrindjeri-Kaurna elder Uncle Moogy, the Tal Kin Jeri dance group, and students from Modbury South Primary. This interactive assembly was a highlight of the term, enriching our students' understanding of Indigenous Australian history and culture.
Our Year 7 students concluded their Civics unit with flair, hosting an election day where they presented their mock campaigns to an audience that included The Hon. Blair Boyer MP, Minister for Education; Tony Zappia MP, Federal Member for Makin; Olivia Savvas MP, State Member for Newland; Mayor Marijka Ryan; and Councillor Irena Zagladov. I am incredibly proud of the learning and engagement demonstrated during this unit. This achievement is a testament to the dedication of our exceptional teachers, led by Cait Thomas, our Year 7 teacher and HASS leader.
As we wrap up Term 2, I look forward to the exciting opportunities Term 3 will bring. Wishing everyone a happy and safe holiday break, and I hope everyone returns refreshed and ready to continue our learning journey.

As part of the 2025 Department for Education ‘Learning Expedition’ pilot, this year’s 703 ITEP (Innovative Technology and Engineering Pathway) class is tackling the inquiry: “How can we create a sustainable community garden?” This project seeks to eventually re-open the Modbury High School Community Garden through their Maths, Science, and Humanities classes.
To inform their expedition, students have been engaging with ‘experts’ and attending ‘fieldtrips’. On Friday 20th of June, they visited the Pioneer Court Community Garden in Highbury, where volunteer Marina Birch and volunteers guided them through the garden and involved them in hands-on work, followed by a shared morning tea where they were able to engage with volunteers and ask questions.
The students were then treated to an informative Adelaide Botanic Garden tour with horticulturalist and MHS Governing Council Chair, Martin Crabb. He showcased the Garden of Health, Herb Garden, and Little Sprout Garden, sparking ideas for the students’ own garden designs.
The excursion left students inspired and ready to begin planning the re-opening of the MHS Community Garden later this year. A huge thank you to Martin Crabb, Lyn Gibbins and Ron Gibbins for volunteering their time to support our students. Stay tuned for garden updates!

Our school’s Pedal Prix teams delivered another strong performance at the 1.33km Victoria Park track here in Adelaide, competing in the Sunday High School race with focus and perseverance. Thankfully, the weather was much kinder to us than it was for the community teams who braved wet conditions on the Saturday.
Our senior trike team, Cheetah led the way with an impressive 175 laps, securing 7th place overall and in their category. Our all-female trike team, Pink Panther completed 127 laps, finishing 6th in their category, while teams Caracal and Lynx pushed through with 131 and 130 laps, respectively. Ocelot finished on 112 laps, and Puma gave a consistent effort with 98 laps.
Our riders showed incredible resilience and teamwork throughout the day. Special mentions go to Kyza McInerney, who clocked our fastest lap of the day at 1 minute 46 seconds, closely followed by Liam Murnane and Marcus Geue, each recording a 1.47 lap time. Marcus Geue and Liam Murnane also demonstrated outstanding endurance, completing 47 and 49 laps respectively.
Our thanks to Fast Cats Racing for lending us their trike, Jaguar, it served us very well.
As always, the support from staff, students, families, and Fast Cats Racing helped make the day a success, our thanks go out them all!
With this race behind us, our focus now turns to the next big race at Tailem Bend Motorsport Park on August 2nd. We can’t wait to see what our teams will achieve next!

On the 13th of June, our Year 7–8 Girls Knockout Netball Team represented Modbury High at Unley High School. They secured a strong win against Botanic High and faced tough matches against Unley and St Aloysius. Despite the challenges, the girls displayed incredible resilience, never giving up and consistently giving their best. Their teamwork, determination and outstanding sportsmanship were clear throughout the day, making our school proud both on and off the court!

On Wednesday 2nd July, we celebrated our first-ever Year 7 Election Day, the exciting finale to our cross-disciplinary Learning Expedition exploring the question: “How can I be an active, democratic citizen?”
Throughout the term, students examined Australia’s political system, developed their own political parties, and ran full class election campaigns. Each class voted in a primary election, with the winning party from each class representing them on the big day—seven candidates in total, all campaigning to ‘win’ the local seat of Newland.
Yesterday morning, the seven parties delivered speeches and presented their policies to a crowd of staff, families, and special guests. All students also proudly showcased their campaign booths, giving everyone a chance to see the creativity, collaboration and critical thinking behind their party campaigns.
We were incredibly honoured to be joined by representatives from all three levels of government, including the Hon. Blair Boyer MP, Tony Zappia MP, Olivia Savvas MP, Mayor Marijka Ryan, andCr. Irena Zagladov—a rare opportunity for students to talk with their local leaders.
We were also fortunate to have the support of Nigel Gill, Education Director of Felixstow 2; Rebekah Goodall, Felixstow 2 Education Leader; Martin Crabb, Chair of the Modbury High School Governing Council; Paula Hensing, Education Officer from the South Australian Electoral Commission who generously supported us throughout the entire day; and Heather Carter and Bill Tonkin from the Department for Education’s Learning Expedition Team.
A huge thank you to our incredible Year 7 team and school community for making this authentic and purposeful learning come to life. A big congratulations to The Future Party, led by Thomas Sharpe who were voted as the winners by the electorate. Well done!

This year we built on a ‘shout out’ initiative to acknowledge staff for their hard work and dedication. So not only do staff continue to send ‘shout outs’ to acknowledge one another, but now students and the community can also send a ‘shout out’. So far this year 307 shout outs have been sent from students to staff at MHS, below are some of the examples.
Well, I've never learnt about entrepreneurship before, but Miss Moeller certainly gave me an amazing first experience. I enjoy entrepreneurship not only because of what we learn but also the teacher we learn it from. Miss Moeller is one of the best teachers at MHS in my opinion. She always knows how she can help and make sure most of her students don't fall behind (not referring to me but still a great attribute). (Ms Moeller)
Even though he doesn't teach me anymore, I was actually able to remember everything I learnt which some teachers fail to do. He explains everything thoroughly and gives help and feedback at any time. (Mr Leibhardt)
