Dear Parents/Caregivers,
I would like to dedicate this edition of the newsletter to honour Jordan Franceschinis who sadly passed away two weeks ago.
Jordan was a young student who, despite the challenges he faced due to a health condition, embraced every opportunity to participate in school life. He loved basketball and was often seen on the court playing with friends. His beautiful smile and genuine warmth greeted everyone he met.
What made him truly special was the way he connected with others. He did not limit his friendships to students in his own year level, but reached out to students of all ages, building strong and caring connections across the school. His teacher loved having him in class, where he contributed with enthusiasm and joy.
In the yard, he could often be found chatting with teachers, sharing stories about his weekend or his basketball games. He spoke openly about his medical condition and the challenges it brought, showing courage and honesty beyond his years. He always showed his appreciation to others, acknowledging their help and support with sincerity and gratitude, which in turn made those around him feel valued and respected. A lasting reminder of this is the beautiful thank-you note he once wrote to Terriann Dearden, first aid SSO, which hangs on her wall, expressing his gratitude for always looking after him and caring for him.
He loved school and was determined to succeed. I remember him proudly running up to me to share that he had received a "Most Improved" certificate—and with a big smile, he promised that he would work hard to earn another one the following term.
He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all in our school community, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family during this very difficult time.

During week 3, 17 of our Tailored Learning students participated in an exciting four-day Business Documents Cluster Short Course, designed to equip them with essential skills for the business world. The course offered a comprehensive exploration of different business models, successful business strategies, budgeting, record keeping, and collaboration with external companies.
Throughout the week, students engaged in dynamic group activities, where they designed their own logos and developed unique business concepts based around a catering company. The students called their business The Culinary Collective. They delved into the components that contribute to making a business successful, applying their newfound knowledge to real-world scenarios.
The course culminated in a delightful event on the final day, where students showcased their creativity and teamwork. They prepared an array of treats, including hot chocolates, cupcakes, chocolate mousse, jelly, and more, all adorned with their custom-designed logos. A local paella company joined the festivities, serving alongside the students' creations.
Dressed in shirts featuring their logos, the students proudly served staff and fellow students a delicious lunch and an assortment of treats. Their hard work and dedication throughout the week were evident in the success of the event.
We are incredibly proud of our students for their commitment and collaboration, and we look forward to seeing how these skills will benefit them in their future endeavours.
The Bend Motorsport Park was buzzing on August 2nd, when 39 Modbury High School students, spread across seven determined teams, took on the expansive 3.4km track for an 8-hour endurance pedal prix race. The day began shrouded in thick fog, forcing a delayed start — but once the flag dropped, the atmosphere was energetic!
Over the course of the race, Modbury High School riders stormed through 350 laps, covering a mammoth 1,193.5 kilometres. Liam Murnane stole the spotlight with a blistering fastest lap of 4 minutes 08 seconds — a 36-second improvement on his previous best at the same track in 2024 — earning him the top spot out of 86 combined MHS and FCR riders.
Team performances and spirit were commendable. Team Cheetah powered through 96 laps, finishing 5th in category. Team Cheetah can hold their heads high after having surged to 3rd place with only 2 hours to go, fighting it out for a podium finish with Concordia College’s Costa and BlackFriar Priory’s Hound and ultimately finishing 12 seconds behind Blackfriars in 5th place. Team Pink Panther fought hard for 64 laps to claim 6th in category. Team Lynx notched up 69 laps, team Puma pushed through for 66 laps, and team Ocelot battled to the finish with 55 laps. Team Hellcat and Cat Attack hosted Modbury High School riders, with 84 and 81 laps consecutively. From the first pedal stroke to the final sprint, the teams showed determination, strategy, and stamina!
Our Tailem Bend 8hr race saw an impressive 10 Modbury High School parents race along side their children. Pedal Prix at Modbury is a great family activity to be a part of! In week 10 of term 2, our Year 12 class had the exciting opportunity to head into the city on a food review excursion to the iconic Adelaide Central Market. The trip was not only a chance to explore one of Adelaide’s most vibrant cultural hubs, but also gave us the opportunity to sharpen our reviewing and critical thinking skills, all while enjoying some seriously delicious food.
After bussing into the city (which in itself was a fun part of the day), we made our way to the markets and split into small groups to begin our food adventures. We wandered through the market’s many food stalls, soaking up the busy atmosphere and taking in the amazing smells from around the world. One of our tasting stops was a local café tucked away among the produce stalls, where we each sampled a freshly made chocolate donut. Warm, soft, and dusted with sugar, it was the perfect sweet treat to finish off our foodie journey.
On Thursday, August 31st, a group of Year 10 and 11 students attended the P.A.R.T.Y. (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth) Program at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. The program aims to raise awareness of the consequences of risk-taking behaviour in youths through an immersive, hands-on hospital experience.
The day began with a presentation outlining the confronting reality of youth trauma. Students then participated in a simulation, taking on medical team roles to follow the journey of a trauma patient, from the resuscitation room to intensive care, gaining insight into the critical work of emergency teams (see photos attached).
In the second session, students worked with allied health professionals, including physiotherapists and a prosthetist, exploring the long-term recovery process. These more light-hearted, interactive activities highlighted the vital role of rehabilitation in helping trauma patients regain independence (see photos attached!).
The day concluded with a powerful presentation from a motorcycle crash survivor. His raw and emotional story left a deep impact, reminding students of the lasting consequences of risky decisions. Students returned to school with a deeper understanding of how risky decisions can lead to life-altering trauma, as well as a greater appreciation for the work of medical professionals, with many expressing interests in future careers in the health field.
On Friday 8th August, Modbury High School hosted its annual Careers and Subject Information Day, a vibrant and engaging event that brought together students, families, and a range of career professionals. With all students from Years 8 to 12 in attendance, along with many of their parents and caregivers, the gym was buzzing with energy and enthusiasm.
The day featured an impressive line-up of guest presenters from various industries and institutions, as well as student-led subject information booths. Attendees had the opportunity to explore future career options, seek advice from experts, and learn from their peers about subject choices that align with specific career pathways.
Many students expressed their appreciation for the event, noting that it helped clarify their goals and gave them a better understanding of the steps needed to pursue their chosen careers. Our guests were equally impressed, praising our students for their respectful behaviour, thoughtful questions, and genuine curiosity.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the day, from the presenters and student volunteers to the families who came along to support their children. A special thank you goes to the representatives from the following institutions, who generously donated their time and expertise to make the day such a valuable experience for our school community: Adelaide University, Flinders University, TAFE SA, the Defence Force, AIE, Queensford College, ANMEC, Connect ‘n’ Grow, NEVC, Workabout Centre, ICHM, 4GR and Together We Can.
