Issue 6

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As we come to the end of Term 2, we look forward to the much-awaited school holidays and the opportunity for everyone to take a well-earned break.

Over the past three weeks, our students have continued to work hard and engage positively in the learning opportunities provided by their teachers. It has been wonderful to see their commitment, perseverance, and growth across the term.

Work Experience

A highlight for our Year 10 students this term was their participation in Work Experience. This valuable opportunity allowed students to gain insight into the world of work experience, what a future career may look like, and consider whether their chosen pathway aligns with their interests and aspirations.

The feedback from employers has been extremely positive, highlighting the respectful, responsible, and enthusiastic young people we have at our school. We are very proud of the way our students represented our community.

Pedal Prix

On Sunday 20 June, our Pedal Prix students participated in the Victoria Park Race. Once again, our students were supported by Fast Cats Racing, Jess Hanlin and Mr Price.  A very big thank you to them for their ongoing commitment, encouragement, and support of our students. Pedal Prix provides our students with fantastic opportunities to develop teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving skills.

Uniform Reminder

A reminder that from the beginning of Term 3, all students are expected to wear the correct uniform items and follow the schoolโ€™s uniform policy. This includes expectations regarding jewellery, makeup, and nail polish.

If you are unsure of the uniform expectations, please refer to the uniform policy available on our website and the uniform poster attached to this newsletter. Thank you for your support in ensuring our students present themselves positively and consistently as members of our school community.

Student Reports

Student assessment reports will be available via Daymap today. I encourage families to take some time to read through their childโ€™s report and have a conversation with them about their learning and progress throughout Term 2.

Reports provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their achievements, celebrate their successes, and identify areas where they can continue to improve. Recognising effort, growth, and commitment is an important part of supporting students to continue developing as learners.

Cultural Carnival

As shared in previous communications, on Friday 14 August our school will be holding a Cultural Carnival. This event is an opportunity for us to celebrate the rich cultural diversity within our school community and learn from one anotherโ€™s experiences, traditions, and backgrounds.

We would love to have parents and caregivers involved in helping us plan and prepare for the day. Your involvement will help make this a meaningful celebration for our whole community.

Thank you for your ongoing support throughout Term 2. We hope all families have a safe, restful, and enjoyable holiday break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 3.

Operation Flinders Peer Mentor Experience โ€“ Noah Cook

One of year 11 students, Noah Cook, was an exercise participant in the 2025 Modbury High Operation Flinders team. Noah continued on with the Operation Flinders Next Step Program in 2026, becoming a Peer Group Mentor (PGM). Noah returned to the Flinders Ranges as a volunteer from June 15-25, where he completed the exercise again as a volunteer, walking with a group of 9 First Nations students and their team leaders from Port Lincoln High School.

Interview Questions:

  1. Tell me an overview / a bit about your experienceโ€ฆ
We got rained on 4 out of the 7 nights of the exercise, sleeping on a gym roll mat under a tarp. This was rough. Sleeping in puddles with little sleep. A highlight was seeing how green it was in the Flinders Ranges, which was very different to the brown and red dirt from last year, the creeks were flowing and there were fish in the creeks.
  2. What was the biggest challenge you overcame in the experience?
Connecting with the boys. We were very different in the ways we were brought up and our cultural backgrounds. A lot of them grew up facing challenges that werenโ€™t familiar to me. It took until the fourth night to connect with them. We were sitting around the campfire doing โ€œhigh, low, heroโ€ of the day. I started it off, telling them about how my day went and they realised that I was struggling as well and that they could connect with me because I was struggling just as much as they were. They opened up about their struggles and what was going on in their lives and their experiences of the trip. I built connections with every single one of them by the end of it and they all wanted a photo with me.
  3. What was the biggest reward of the experience?
On the last night around the camp fire, the boys said they didnโ€™t want to leave, after 6 days of saying all I want to do is go home. After some challenging behaviour throughout the experience, the boys realised that we were there for them the whole time, even though they tested the boundaries. I learnt from this that it just takes time to work through challenging behaviours.
  4. Biggest takeaway from the whole experience?
Seeing how much the boys changed over the 7 days and how much progress theyโ€™d made โ€“ our Team Leader said it was the most progress heโ€™d seen a group ever make in the 7 days.
  5. Advice to the 2026 Modbury High participants?
Sign up as a PGM! Have fun and be proud of yourself out there. It is tough, and when you think you canโ€™t do it, you can because there are people out there supporting you.

Outdoor Education at Modbury High School

Our Year 9 students recently embarked on Modbury High Schoolโ€™s very first bush walk camp experience, with an unforgettable two-day adventure at Mount Crawford. Under the guidance of Mr Rob Yeend and supported by Ms Cait Thomas, the students navigated through the scenic beauty of both Mount Crawford and Little Mount Crawford, and on the second day, taking on the challenge of reaching the historic fire tower lookout.

Over the two days, students travelled an impressive 30 kilometres across varied terrain, demonstrating fantastic teamwork, resilience, and navigational skills. The first day ended with students cooking dinner on Trangiaโ€™s, then gathering around the campfire they lit, sharing stories and laughter, (from some pretty ordinary โ€˜dad jokesโ€™).

For many, it was their first experience camping and hiking in such a stunning setting, creating memories and building connections that will last a lifetime. The success of this adventure marks a significant milestone for Modbury High School, and we look forward to many more Outdoor Education experiences in the future.

Congratulations to all participants!

petal prix - Victoria Park

Our four Pedal Prix teams took to the 1.33km track on Sunday, 21st June for the 6-hour Pedal Prix event at Victoria Park. After a chilly start, it warmed up to be a beautiful sunny day with a vibrant atmosphere, where students and supporters all enjoyed an action-packed day filled with competition and teamwork.

Team Cheetah delivered an impressive performance, achieving 10th place in their category and 11th overall. The team of five riders completed an outstanding 166 laps, with notable fastest laps recorded by Liam H (1 min 41 sec) and Marcus G (1 min 45 sec).

The Pink Panther team showed great determination to claw their way back after a 20+ minute crash delay but still took 8th in their sub-category with 116 laps by six riders. With the fastest lap of 2:16.

Team Puma had a stellar performance to secure 31st place in their category, accumulating 114 laps thanks to the contributions of six riders. Elliot G was the standout performer for Puma, recording the teamโ€™s fastest lap at 2 minutes 7 seconds.

Our Lynx team also gave a solid performance, finishing 36th in their category with 110 laps completed by six dedicated riders. Both Callum Z and Marley H posted equal fastest laps for the team, each achieving a time of 2 minutes 14 seconds.

Congratulations to all students for their incredible effort, team spirit, and determination. Thank you to Fast Cats Racing, parents, and supporters for their ongoing encouragement and assistance. We look forward to our next event at The Bend Motorsport Park, Tailem Bend with excitement and pride in what our riders have achieved together so far.

year 11 camp

From 29 June to 1 July, 90 Year 11 students headed to Yankalilla for our first Year 11 Camp. We stayed at the Dzintari campsite, which sits on top of a hill with great views of the coast. While the weather was a bit rainy, it didn't stop us from making the most of the three days.

Students took part in a range of activities including an escape room challenge, Home Group vs Home Group games, daily challenges and secret missions, a Normanville hike and scavenger hunt, an astronomy talk, a campfire, an AIF masterclass and plenty of other activities.

On the first night, two Home Groups cooked a Mexican feast with the help of their teachers, which was a highlight for many. Students also enjoyed the fantastic catering from Ash and Kel's Kitchen throughout the camp.

A big thank you to all the staff who helped organise, run and support the camp, and to our Year 11 students for getting involved, giving things a go and representing the school so well โ€“ for many of our students this was their first school camp!
